Within 24 hours, Yanez interviewed for Academy District 20’s vacated board director seat, was voted as the Board’s selected applicant, and was officially sworn and took her Oath of Office at a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

“I want to give back, specifically though, to Academy District 20,” Yanez said during her interview.

Yanez is the current owner and director of a local preschool. She has filled several roles across D20 including a teacher, paraprofessional, volunteer and PTO member at Woodmen-Roberts Elementary and Chinook Trail Middle Schools. Before working in D20, Yanez was a Court-Appointed Special Advocate with CASA of the Pikes Peak Region.

“As a lifelong educator, and former D20 teacher and staff member, Lauren brings a great depth of experience. Her skills will be integral to furthering the success of Academy District 20 and helping us achieve our Board Ends of knowledge, skills, and character,” said Board President, Aaron Salt said.

Yanez’s appointment comes after the Board narrowed 24 applicants to five finalists on Thursday, Dec. 14. The finalists then participated in 45-minute, in-person interviews, which were also live-streamed. Each finalist was asked the same 14 questions.

This appointment fills the final seat available on D20 BOE. Yanez will hold the director seat until the next regular school biennial election in November 2025. Her first official board meeting will be Thursday Jan. 4, 2024.
