What is the Portrait of a Graduate?

It shapes the future of Academy District 20 students. The Portrait of a Graduate is a shared vision of the core competencies every student will cultivate throughout their education in Academy District 20. It guides our instruction, culture, and community partnerships, preparing students to succeed in college, career, and life.

The Six Core Competencies

Prepared Decision Maker
Graduates take personal responsibility, develop professional skills, and make ethical, informed decisions. They are prepared to face challenges with confidence and integrity.

Lifelong Learner
Our students are curiosity seekers who objectively analyze, reflect, and adapt to new information. They embrace feedback and maintain a growth mindset, continually learning throughout their lives.

Critical Thinker
Graduates are problem solvers who analyze complex situations and ideas. They show grit and innovation, persevere through challenges, and take calculated risks to achieve positive outcomes.

Effective Communicator
Our students become skilled writers, speakers, and listeners who communicate ideas effectively, appropriately, and creatively—in person, in writing, and in digital environments.

Connected Individual
Graduates value collaboration and self-awareness. They build healthy and productive relationships, respect diverse perspectives, and take responsibility for their growth and contributions to the community.

Contributing Citizen
Empathy, cultural awareness, and a commitment to the greater good define our students. They demonstrate exemplary citizenship and positively impact society through their actions.
