School Choice Process
Participation in School Choice
If you’d like your student to attend an Academy District 20 (ASD20) school which is different to the one assigned to your student's address, or if your student lives outside of district boundaries, you will need to apply for School Choice.
Non-participating Schools
While most Academy District 20 schools accept School Choice applications, there are a few exceptions. The schools below do not participate in School Choice:
Aspen Valley Middle School
Aspen Valley High School
The Village High School
The Classical Academy (TCA)
New Summit Charter Academy
Preschool
Transitioning from 2020
If your student enrolled at Journey K8 due to the pandemic, they will automatically be returned to their neighborhood school for the 2021-2022 school year. This also applies to students transitioning from elementary to middle school, or middle to high school.
Families who withdrew their student to be homeschooled will need to re-register. School Choice will apply if you'd like your student to attend a school other than their neighborhood school.
Application Acceptance & Considerations
School Choice applies to students, kindergarten through 12th grade, wishing to attend a school other than their neighborhood school. Students are accepted based on space availability and in the following priority order:
In-district families with siblings already attending the school selected;
In-district families with no siblings attending the school selected;
Out-of-district employee children;
Returning out-of-district students;
New out-of-district students.
If more students apply than seats available, a lottery is held, following the same priority order.
Students Already Participating in School Choice
In-district students transitioning from elementary to middle school, or middle to high school, who are currently participating in School Choice, will automatically be enrolled in the middle or high school that is on the feeder path of that school.
Out-of-district students transitioning from elementary to middle school, or from middle to high school, who are currently participating in School Choice, will need to re-apply for School Choice.
Submit an Application
If you would like to send your student to any school other than their neighborhood school, you must submit a School Choice Application.
This year's applications are entirely online.
The application will be available on this page when the School Choice Window opens.
After the Application
Once your application is submitted you will receive an email confirmation from our Central Registry Office containing any additional instructions or next steps.
Our first round of School Choice decisions will be made in January. This may change depending on the volume of applications.
The second round of decisions occurs in April.
If you wish to change your School Choice selection, or revert back to a neighborhood school, a new School Choice application may be submitted per the posted School Choice Window dates.
Applications may be withdrawn until March 17, 2021.
