After 14 years of teaching Social Studies, Matt Stewart is embarking on a new educational journey. He is one of 25 people chosen for the Colorado Springs Mayor’s Civic Leaders Fellowship. Every year, a cohort of people from diverse backgrounds are united by a shared passion for civic and community engagement.

“I feel immensely honored to be part of such an impressive group,” Stewart said.

Over the next year, Stewart will learn about the Colorado Springs government, volunteer at local events, attend city council meetings, and complete a capstone project aligned with Mayor Yemi Mobolade’s strategic goals for 2024.

As the sole teacher in the group, Stewart’s mission is to develop meaningful connections to bring back to his classroom.

“I want to amplify student voice in our community by getting our local leaders to hear what students have to say,” Stewart said.
