The COVID-19 Pandemic impacted our ability to hold traditional graduation ceremonies. However, El Paso County and State officials worked together to create a variance allowing us to create modified, graduate-only, in-person graduation ceremonies.

Modified, in-person ceremonies

We are planning graduate-only ceremonies in alignment with El Paso County’s approved variance for five of our high schools. Aspen Valley High School and the Village High School will hold virtual graduation ceremonies.

While we are actively planning these in-person ceremonies, we must be prepared to abandon our plans should the COVID-19 pandemic spike. If that happens, virtual graduations will be held on the same dates, and times planned for the modified in-person ceremonies.

Those uncomfortable participating in the in-person ceremony, need not be present to be recognized.

El Paso County graduation ceremony guidelines

We are planning ceremonies in alignment with El Paso County’s approved variance for five of our high schools. Our ceremonies will allow each student to be accompanied by two family members. Aspen Valley High School and the Village High School will hold virtual graduation ceremonies.

  • Ceremony plans must include a fully virtual option in the event incoming data contraindicates hosting in-person ceremonies.
  • Ceremonies are required to be held outside with weather contingency plans of transition to virtual only or tents. Interior ceremonies are prohibited.
  • All students and staff would need to meet 6 ft social distancing at all times including entering and exiting the ceremony.
  • If outside facilities cannot accommodate the 6 ft distancing, graduation ceremonies would need to be done in the number of shifts that would allow for distancing.
  • No parents/observers on-site (ceremonies must be broadcast electronically for all viewers.)
  • No associated social gatherings of students or faculty at facilities prior to or following the ceremony.
  • All students and staff must be in masks at all times with the exception of individual photographs by official photographer while social distancing from others.
  • No touch or contact receipt of the diploma such as presentation on a table by staff to be picked up by the student.
  • Permission slip or behavior contract to be signed by student and family concerning risks mitigation to include Health screening survey completed prior to ceremony (fever, cough, congestion, chills, or otherwise unwell in the student or member of your household in the past 14 days) with any positive answers being exclusionary to the ceremony.
  • Organizers must include an inclusionary plan for accommodating families or students not wishing to or who are unable to participate in person.

Additional measures to consider:

  • Students should be encouraged to avoid vulnerable persons for the two weeks following their participation in the graduation ceremony.
  • Communication to the students should include a recommendation that they do not participate if a family member is vulnerable.

Graduate specific details

  • Members of the Class of 2020 will receive specific information and details from their schools via email.
  • Graduates will be able to download a copy of the health screening form in the near future.
