Our own students, parents, and patrons have expressed increasing concern about equity and inclusion in our classrooms and schools. They have cited concerns with disparities in student achievement, exclusion of marginalized populations, expressions of hate and racism, and the need for a more culturally diverse staff.
DEI Initiative Kick-Off
Today we are announcing the first step in facing these challenges head on. DEI is one of my Superintendent Initiatives for 2020-21. Beginning this fall, we will embark on a DEI initiative to create an Academy District 20 that is free of biases and hate.
The first step in this process is understanding our current reality. We are therefore seeking assistance from an experienced consultant/consulting firm to conduct an equity audit of our district.
DEI Consultant Selection Committee Members Needed
We are also seeking members of our community – parents/families, patrons, high school* students, teachers, and staff – to assist with the competitive process for selection of the DEI audit consulting firm. *Please note, students must currently be in high school to be considered for this committee.
DEI on ASD20.ORG
Individuals interested in being a part of our DEI Consultant Selection Committee should visit the new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion section of ASD20.ORG to learn more about this initiative and how to apply for this committee.
We anticipate there will be a high level of interest to participate in this process. Please know, this is just one opportunity to participate in this important work. Additional DEI committees, focus groups, etc., will be formed throughout the year.
K – 8 Quarter Transition
Our Return to School Plan states when families make their learning choice, students in kindergarten through 8th grade, are required to make a quarter-long commitment. This means, at the beginning of each quarter, families have the option to either:
transition from Journey K8 (JK8) back to their primary school of enrollment, OR
transition from their primary school of enrollment to JK8.
It might seem hard to believe, but the end of the first quarter is just around the corner, on Oct. 16, 2020. Therefore, next week we will email steps and instructions for those families who are interested in pursuing a transition. Please keep an eye out for this communication.
Please remember, we continue to offer our free meal service for students who are 18 years old or younger. This program will run through Dec. 30, 2020, or until funding is exhausted. Please visit the School Meals section of ASD20.ORG for details.
Thank you for your continued support of our district, and your flexibility and patience during these ever-changing times.
Be well and be safe.
