Our Charge: Develop a five-year strategic plan.

In 2018/19 students, families, staff, community members and partners were asked about their hopes for the future of Academy District 20. One of the top requests was strategic direction and clarity around the district’s mission, vision and values. In fact, nearly 65% of those surveyed didn’t know the vision and values of the district, and many named the “lack of clarity and strategy” as a major concern.

Our Journey

Work on the strategic plan began in the fall of 2019. Project leaders – teachers, principals, staff members, administrators, students, parents/guardians and community partners – came together to form the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee. The committee, led by internal leaders and external consultants, met regularly over the course of six months to:

  • Complete a Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats Assessment (SWAT) & Political, Economic, Social and Technology Analysis (PEST)

  • Discuss and clarify the current state of the district

  • Develop a Current State Report (CSR)

  • Complete a comprehensive data analysis

During the spring of 2020, the district held an Open Space Forum, where the community shared thoughts and ideas about the district’s current state and how best to move forward.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district was forced to put the strategic planning work on hold until the fall of 2020. At that time a smaller Strategic Planning Think Tank was established.

The Think Tank updated the Current State Report with a COVID Epilogue and identified natural intersections with the diversity, equity and inclusion work happening in the district. The Think Tank then identified, clarified and defined the district’s mission, vision and values. After holding more than a dozen online and in-person feedback sessions the district built the tactics and action steps for the strategic plan.

After nearly two years of research, listening, brainstorming, planning, editing and sharing, the district has a Strategic Framework with an updated mission, vision and values statements.

The mission, vision and values statements serve as the root system for our Strategic Framework and Plan. The mission explains why we exist, and our values explains what we believe and how we behave. Together they set the direction for where we will go in the future. Read more about our mission, vision and values.
